This week we were introduced to songwriter and producer Gary Clark. As a well established songwriter he is known for his role in the successful band Danny Wilson and more recently his work with the high profile artists of todays music industry. We discussed as a group the key components of a successful song, including factors such as style, appropriate titles and lyrical subjects as well as showcasing some of our own work for feedback. It was great to be given the opportunity for such a well established artist to hear and critique my music and I feel I am always learning new ways to better myself as an artist.
The brief we have been set builds on the discussion we had with Gary Clark and his reflections on writing music for other artists in the industry. We have been asked to choose one artist from a list for which we will write a song that resonates with their existing musical style, their direction as artists and their personal narrative style.
I have chosen Aloe Blacc who performs in a wide variety of genres including Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul and Funk. I feel that my style of writing fits within this musical spectrum but the challenge will be incorporating elements that mean my song fits stylistically into the mainstream music scene.
