This week we were given our first collaborative brief titled "Glasgow's Green Year in 2015: From Steam to Green." The assignment requires us to explore modern issues such as environmental awareness, renewable energy and low carbon alternatives, all hot topics in the run up to Glasgow's "Green Themed" year. 2015 also marks the 250th anniversary of James Watt's separate steam condenser invention, a development which saw rise to the industrial revolution. The Celebration highlights Glasgow's ongoing position at the forefront of innovation.
My initial thoughts about the brief are that there are a lot of topics to cover in one song. An area I feel I will find particularly challenging is celebrating steam power, which often involved burning a lot of coal or wood, whilst also promoting new green and renewable energy. However I realise that Watt's ideas were ground breaking at the time and perhaps I should focus on his innovation in steam technology and its importance in our history, rather than the steam engines impact on the environment.
A lot to think about but I look forward to translating my ideas into music.
