Since starting the course at UWS we have been given tasks where we need to use some form of specific stimulus to aid our songwriting. As such I think this has improved my songwriting greatly. Therefore, as this brief is relatively open I have decided to seek out my own stimulus in order to encourage some creative ideas.
Since my set is themed around death and darkness I have been looking at tales of hauntings in the southern states of America. I have started writing a song using a story called "The Savannah Slave Ship" as stimulus. The story tells the tale of a ship that was sunk after the slaves onboard broke loose, destroying the supports which held the frame of the boat together. The slaves in chains and the panicked slavers went down with the ship in the Savannah River. It is said that their ghosts haunt the river today as there have been several unexplainable boat accidents in the spot where the ship went down (Buxton, 2007).
